Royal Connaught Park is an architecturally impressive Grade II listed building located in the semi-rural town of Bushey. It was once home to the Royal Masonic School for Boys and is now being transformed into luxury homes.
The location of Royal Connaught Park couldn’t be more ideal for those looking to commute to London or needing access to a major motorway. Bushey train station is in Zone 8 and only 5 minutes away with connections to many parts of London; the M1, M25 and Watford Town Centre are all within easy reach too.
If Royal Connaught Park looks familiar, that is because it doubled as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter Films. But when it comes to schools, you won’t need magic to find one of excellent standing in the area, such as Bushey Heath Primary School, Queens School, Bournehall Primary School, and The Bushey Academy. Private schools include St Hilda’s Preparatory for girls, Haberdashers’ Aske’s for Boys, Haberdashers’ Aske’s for Girls, and Merchant Taylors.
The area has a rich cinematic history due to its close proximity to Borehamwood and Elstree studios. Yet its links to film go back even further, to one of the town’s most famous residents Hubert Herkomer. German-born Herkomer settled in Bushey in 1883, he was an artist and opened an art school, and later went on to direct several historical costume dramas. His legacy remains on the site of his art school, which is now a tranquil rose garden.
There is plenty of beautiful countryside surrounding Bushey and Royal Connaught Park, which itself is set on 100 acres of parkland. There is a beautiful walk through Attenborough’s Fields and Merry Hill, 76-hectare woodland owned by the Woodland Trust. Archaeological evidence points to the town being inhabited before the Domesday Book but it really started to develop due to industry between the 19th and 20th centuries.
What’s great about Bushey is that even though it’s extremely accessible and close to London, it has still managed to retain the feel of a rural village, with its period cottages, ancient church, and duck pond. It’s also home to one of the most prestigious private members’ clubs within the southeast, Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club.
On the high street, there is a lovely selection of independent shops and great places to eat, such as St James Restaurant, which uses the finest and freshest ingredients. Bushey is also home to the oldest parkland golf course in Hertfordshire: Bushey Hall Golf Club.
Inside Royal Connaught Park residents can take advantage of a private health and fitness studio with state of the art equipment, complete with a heated swimming pool and sauna.
